Dear Edna Jean,
My boyfriend and I are HIV-. Recently, “Don” came over and said that he was going to start taking PrEP and that we didn’t need to continue to use condoms anymore. This is scary to me. How do I tell him I am not ready for that?

Dear UnPrEPared,
Say it just like that: “I’m not ready for that step.” Safer sex has been the norm for a long time now and there is so much more out there than HIV. Safer sex practices: the use of a condom, is still the best known way to prevent HIV and other STD infections. I am sure you have a lot of questions for “Don” so, don’t be scared, start asking questions. Visit your health care provider together and allow him to help guide the two of you in the right direction.

I also want to point out that I find it so exciting that we are talking about freedom from condoms, sexual freedom in general and the possibility of a world where AIDS is not killing us or shortening lives.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
